While doing some research for my story, I found something I thought was very interesting. Most romione shippers and Ron supporters are well aware of the basement scene in Malfoy Manor (unless you only watched the movies, and were thereby cheated out of an excellent point of character development), but I don’t think a lot of people understand just how meaningful that was.
First, you have to be aware that Ron Weasley is not a stupid person. He may be slower about certain emotional cues, and he isn’t at the head of his lessons, but he is NOT stupid. He is able to plan and strategize, and he sees details that others miss.
Second, although he does have fears, he is not a comical coward. He might be reluctant, but he is always right there in the thick of things, even when it has to do with something he’s phobic about.
Knowing these things, the contrast became very clear. In the first book, when he’s trapped by the Devil’s Snare, he doesn’t fall to pieces. He can’t fully relax, but most people couldn’t in that situation. But while Hermione is dithering about finding wood, Ron is able to focus enough to remind her that she can use her wand. Afterwards, he’s able to play (and WIN) a chess match with the lives of his friends hanging in the balance. And he’s only twelve.
Fast forward to the Manor. He himself is in no immediate danger, but now, now he panics. Screaming, crying, beating the walls; he runs around looking for any way out he can. He doesn’t listen to Harry, and the only time he snaps out of it is when something happens to bring him closer to getting to Hermione. He tries to Disapparate without a wand. That might not seem like much; some would say it was stupid, since you can’t perform magic without a wand. Oh, but you can. Remember Aunt Marge? It may be nearly impossible without a wand to channel it, but it can be done. And Ron, growing up as a wizard, knows how dangerous and unpredictable wandless magic is at the best of times. For something as dangerous as Disapparating is even with wands, when you can Splinch yourself, the results could be…..well. Nothing pleasant. But he doesn’t care, because it’s the only thing he can think of to get to her.
Even when Fred dies, he’s able to function better. He makes sure to help Hermione to safety, helps Harry defend them from attack, and doesn’t break down until they get away. And even then, Hermione is able to hold him back, when no one in the basement could get him to listen to reason.
So in that basement, you aren’t just seeing his normal reaction to terror; Ron is no stranger to near death experiences, and he knows how to keep his head when everyone around him is losing theirs. But all that changes when it comes to Hermione, and if you don’t think that’s one of the most moving pieces of proof of his love for her, then you might need to go back and read those books again.
cant believe a bunch of english kids go through a fuckin cupboard and find a magical kingdom full of wonder and they go “yeah we’re the royal family now”
typical english behaviour
I think what’s more creepily imperialistic is the reaction of everyone in Narnia to the Pevensies.
Like, the Pevensies end up the royal family in large part because everyone’s like ‘it has been prophesied that you will come and rule us and everything will be great!’ and, well, in-universe I can’t really fault them on that; if I were a young teen or pre-teen in a completely foreign country, I too would probably just go along with whatever seem to make people friendly to me.
But the reaction of the Narnians, in almost ubiquitously welcoming these foreigners as obviously destined to rule them even though they know nothing of the country and the culture… now that is some creepily imperialist writing.
This is the only good reblog of this post in it’s entire 3 year hellscape existence
if four foreign kids popped out of a magic box and deposed trump by the express wishes of god’s fursona, i’d crown ‘em. this winter already fuckin feels like it’s lasted 100 years.
it’s ginny’s first ever game as a professional quidditch player, and as the players are coming into the stadium, harry, being in the stands, overhears someone nearby say ginny got into the harpies because of the fame and fortune since she’s dating harry. and about two minutes into the game, ginny scores the first point of the season, and harry turns to the person and says “actually, she didn’t buy her way in. she got in on pure talent” and hermione is beside him, rolling her eyes.
Gryffindor: Hair held up by pencils, laughing with friends in the library, cups of cocoa, the sound of flipping through papers, the smell of old books, falling asleep in class, humming while you work, debates with friends
Slytherin: Surrounded by empty coffee cups, three textbooks open at once, working at 2 in the morning, competing with friends for higher grades, studying out of spite, working to prove someone wrong, rolling your eyes at your textbook’s stupid jokes, sassing teachers because you’re friends
Ravenclaw: Messy bullet journals, papers sticking out of binders, impromptu study sessions, binging crash course videos for fun, doodles on the corners of worksheets, never-ending “TBR” piles of books, dog-eared pages, neat buns, dressing up nice to study
Hufflepuff: warm drinks in big mugs, studying in morning sunlight, oversized sweaters, classical music, reading by the fire, studying with friends, bringing your textbook to a small coffee shop, studying with a cat by your side, being asked by classmates to tutor them
n is for nothing in the world could have ever prepared james potter for realising that peter had sentenced him, his wife, his baby to death. peter pettigrew, always a bumbling happy little boy, somewhat insecure, somewhat oddly placed between james and sirius, but nevertheless a true friend, a real brother. james loved him and would have gone to the ends of the earth to protect pete, would have died to save him if he were given no other choice. but peter, peter willingly left his best friend, wife and child to voldemort. nothing could have ever surpassed the weight of james’ heart as he realised, the last thoughts that raced through his mind as he fell to the floor. his trust had never faltered.

I usually prefer canon only, but these are such good analyses ( like Gryffindor = royalty lines of Arthur, foreshadowing/recap of the series in the 1st and 7th books)
these are my favorites
anyways, some of these can be far-fetched and otherwise proven, but still good conversation/thought starters!
